Sustainable community

Living lightly, living together

We imagine a community that gives back more than it takes — to the land, and to the people who have always lived alongside it.

Our principles

Respect for land and neighbours

Nature protection, collaboration with local communities and social entrepreneurship are the three commitments the prospectus places at the centre of the model. Each would guide how land is used, how homes are built and which activities the board approves.

In practice

What this could look like

Nature protection

Protecting coral reefs, mangroves, trees, water sources and wildlife; favouring native planting and low-impact building.

Local collaboration

Working with nearby communities, local builders and suppliers, and listening before acting.

Social entrepreneurship

Space for residents and partners to start ventures that create local value. Commercial activities would contribute 10% of profits to the LTD.

Shared resources

Contributions to the LTD would support management of the shared land and community.

Board stewardship

Activities and construction require board approval to protect the character of the place.

Learning together

Exchange of skills and knowledge between residents and the wider community.

Entrepreneurs should note that business activities may require separate work permits and business licenses under Zanzibar and Tanzanian law, depending on where the activity takes place. The LTD may assist with these processes, but cannot guarantee approval.
