Retirement living · Tanzania

Sea breezes, slow mornings, careful plans

Retiring to an island is wonderful — and it asks for good preparation. Here is what we encourage everyone considering Tanzania — and the islands of Zanzibar and Mafia in particular — to think through.

Practical considerations

What a good island retirement needs

We don't make promises about specific services. We help you assess them, and encourage you to verify everything on a visit.

Healthcare access

Look into the clinics and hospitals within reach of where you might live, which treatments may need travel to the mainland or abroad, and insurance that includes medical evacuation.

Transport

Think about airport access for trips home and family visits, ferry links to the mainland, and road travel on the island during the rainy seasons.

Infrastructure

Power, water and internet can vary by area. Ask about reliability and whether solar, water storage or backup connections would be needed.

Community

Neighbours, local partners and shared activities matter greatly to wellbeing. Island communities are close-knit; respect for local culture is essential.

Cost of living

Imported goods, healthcare, insurance and flights can weigh more than you expect. Build a personal budget using current, locally checked prices.

Residency & legal

Living on Zanzibar or Mafia requires separate immigration authorization. Zanzibar has its own land and administrative requirements, while Mafia Island is administered as part of mainland Tanzania — each needs qualified local legal review.

Culture & daily life

A place with deep roots

Zanzibar's Swahili culture, markets, music and food offer a rich everyday life. Learning some Swahili, dressing and behaving respectfully, and getting to know local people are part of making a true home here.

Accessible by design

Within the proposed community, the board would approve construction and could encourage single-level homes, shaded step-free terraces and layouts that suit changing needs over time. Specific design standards would be set during planning.
